NEW PICK - A - PROJECT

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION SERIES

Looking for some answers? Log on to http://4h.unl.edu/volunteers/InfoSeries.htm. This is available to give you what you need, when you need it. Call the Extension, 694-6174, if you have any questions.

LOST AND FOUND

A necklace was found after the 4-H Swimming Party. Contact the Extension Office to identify and claim.

PRODUCTION PIG ENTRIES

Affidavits are due in the Extension Office by April 4th. Pigs should be weighed between March 24 and April 4. If you have any questions, please contact Mark Janzen at 737-3323.

4-H FIESTA

The 4-H Fiesta training held Monday, March 3rd, was attended by parents, 4-H Council members, Junior Leaders, Extension staff, a guest presenter and Leaders from the Busy Beavers, Clever Clovers, 4-Star Hamilton Heroes, Eager Achievers, Marquette Marketeers and Sunshine Daisies 4-H Clubs. Participants were treated to new 4-H information, chips and salsa and lemon-lime floats. Jeanette forgot her sombrero, and we didn’t make Jim put on the big one decorating the refreshment table!!

Kae welcomed the group and had a short talk about the upcoming speech clinic, the format change you may notice in the 4-H Newsletter, the importance of utilizing the newsletter, the combined enrollment/project deadline of May 1st and the 4-H Talent Revue on March 30th. New support staff member, Peggy Crosser, was introduced at this time.

D’Ette Scholtz, Extension Educator from Hall County presented the new Diamond Clover Award Program. This is an excellent way for every 4-Her to participate and succeed in an award program. There is a notebook for you to look at, or we have copies for you to take home. Refreshments were served, and then Jim took us through the new financial requirements on the Winter Warm Up DVD. There is a lot of information on the DVD, and it is available for you to check out. Jeanette walked through the Clubs of Excellence application and encouraged all clubs to consider doing this as most of the requirements you are probably already incorporating into your meetings.

Thank you to all who attended this training. We appreciate your time!!

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES -

SE District 4-H Community Service Project

Please collect pop tabs, soup can and pet food tabs and all other aluminum tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Bring them to the Extension Office, and we will take it from there!! Cardboard houses for pop tab collection will be available in the Extension Office after March 6th. Let’s see how many pop tabs Hamilton County 4-H can collect for this worthy cause!! For more information about the Ronald McDonald House Charities go to: http://www.mcdonalds.com/rmhc/index.html.

Busy Beavers Invite You to Participate In Their Community Service Project “Think Recycle”

The Busy Beavers have started to collect ink, laser and toner cartridges and used cell phones through the recycling/fund-raising program offered by “Think Recycle”. The program collects all items listed above and allows organizations to earn funds on qualifying items. “Think Recycle” is partnered with The Tree Canada Foundation and American Forest who will sponsor the planting of one tree for every twelve qualifying items collected.

This will be an ongoing project with no stop dates set by the recycling organization. Please drop off any of these items at the Extension Office in the collection box. The funds we hope to collect will be used to better the community. We will gladly consider suggestions for items the County 4-H Program or County Fair might need. Please write these suggestions on paper and put them in the collection box. Thank you. THINK RECYCLE!!

Busy Beavers,
Billy Jo Tomasek Dwight Comer
Steve Tomasek

ACTION CORNER -

Speech Workshop Well-Attended

Twelve youth attended a speech workshop presented by Jean and Aaron Blase on Saturday, March 8th at the 4-H Building. They learned about the Introduction, 2-3 point Body and the Conclusion. They also received tips on using an attention getter; walking and talking; and presenting with eye contact and confidence. Public Speaking can be as much about the amount of time you are willing to practice as it is about the content of your speech.

Instructor, Jean Blase, assisted by Aaron Blase, would like to congratulate those who took the workshop on their hard work and the amount they got accomplished in a short time. “Great job!!”

Morgan Bredthauer Elizabeth Cox
Shelby Hoffman Libby Johnson
Sarah Maul Paige McCoy
Kristen Pfeifer Jasmine Russell
Trevor Sullivan Sharisa Tyma
Lindsey Wert Madison Wert

Annual Clean Up

The Go Big Red 4-H Club, quietly and without a lot of fanfare, took on their annual clean up project at the Phillips Park on Sunday, March 9th. The Go Big Red group does this every year before the volunteer fireman’s Easter Egg Hunt. This is a fabulous community service for the little ones who will be all over the park looking for those Easter Egg treasures. I’m sure the firemen and parents appreciate it, too!! Well done Go Big Red!! Great Idea, Great Job!!

MARKET BROILER PROJECT

It is time once again to place your order for chicks. The broiler project is a great way to learn about animal production, and it teaches responsibility. And best of all, it is a short term project and can generate edible chicken and income. There will be a new class added to this project this year: Rate of Gain - choose one bird from your flock and the fattest bird will win the class.

Order in groups of 25. The price is expected to be about $.80/bird. You will receive your birds in mid-June. Enter them in the fair as a pen-of-three broilers, eligible for the livestock sale. Judging will be on quality and uniformity with a target weight of 6 pounds.

You MUST RESERVE BIRDS by April 25th to be eligible for this class.

NEW! AK-SAR-BEN REQUIRES FEEDER CALF DNA SAMPLE

The Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Livestock Exposition is requiring that all Feeder Calves have a DNA hair sample on file, as well as being tagged to be eligible to exhibit at the 2008 show. Samples must be pulled by June 15th and submitted in an Ak-Sar-Ben issued DNA collection envelope. Please contact Jim at the Extension Office if you wish to have a sample submitted.

ATTENTION: 4-H SPEECH PARTICIPANTS GRADES 8 - 11

Public Speaking Opportunity

Speak Out for Military Kids (SOMK) is a program designed to utilize the skills of civilian and military teens to educate Nebraska residents about the stresses faced by military youth when a parent or parents are deployed. 4-H youth in grades 8 - 11 are encouraged to consider a public speaking topic related to the military. This program allows their topic to also include 4-H.

Each county will select the top military themed speech at their County Speech Contest. As their county's representative, that youth will receive an invitation to participate in Nebraska's SOMK retreat tentatively planned for the weekend of June 27 - 29. During the retreat, youth will meet military and 4-H teens from across Nebraska. They will work with the Mobile Technology Lab to develop videos, PSA's and a number of other programs to further the message in our state.

Interested youth can visit our national and state websites at www.operationmilitarykids.org and www.nebraskaomk.org to learn more about the program. Youth in grades 8 - 11 are encouraged to consider this public speaking opportunity and write a military themed speech for this year's 4-H speech. This is an opportunity for Nebraska 4-H to play a crucial role in educating their communities and forming support networks for military youth.

The horticulture contest, along with the tree and grass/weed contests, will be moved back to the State Fair and will be held on Saturday, August 30th. Specific location and time details will follow once they are finalized.

The horticulture contest will be plant identification only. A new plant list along with a study guide can be found at http://www.agronomy.unl.edu/newoutreach/youthprograms.html. The new plant list contains plants that are commonly used/sold in Nebraska. Eighty plants will be selected from this list.

Top four place winners in the horticulture contest will have the opportunity to participate in a proposed horticultural education trip during the summer of 2009. This trip is tentatively replacing the late fall trip from previous years.

A new online horticulture contest will be available. This is just an extra contest and will have no impact on the state horticulture contest. The plant list will be the same for this online contest which will be open from July 7-13th. A link to access this contest will become available closer to the date.

We have a couple of fun projects lined up for this year. Back, due to popular demand, is the "Tall Corn" project. We will provide the tall corn seed, and it's up to you to plant the seed and nurture the crop. Let's see who can grow the tallest corn.

The other project is the "Upside Down Tomato" project. How well can you make a tomato grow upside down? We will provide the protocol and data sheet. You will provide a tomato seedling, a plastic bucket with lid and potting soil. This promises to be a lot of fun and educational too!

LIFE CHALLENGE EVENT

Life Challenge is the Family Consumer Science judging contest! Here is how it works: Anyone over 12 years 4-H age may participate in the state Life Challenge Event, June 30 - July 1, in Lincoln. We can send teams to compete, but we must know by June 2nd that you are interested. We will practice with the team so you are prepared for the competition. It’s a lot of fun! Anyone under 12 years 4-H age may participate in an “on-line” quiz that will be available this summer. We’ll announce the details when they are available.

CSI: CROP SCIENCE INVESTIGATION

Youth age 8-18 interested in science, agriculture, plants, crops, insects, or diseases may be interested in being a part of the CSI (Crop Science Investigation) club!!! This club is sponsored by UNL Extension 4-H, but you don’t have to be a 4-H member to join! Keys to what you’ll do: Learn about the importance of agriculture and how crops are used; conduct cool, hands-on science experiments, like extracting plant DNA; Listen to speakers; Tour agricultural facilities; Help conduct field plot research; Become a CSI investigator and detect plant problems. If this sounds like fun to you, please give Jim a call to leave your contact information.

4-H CLOVER CHALLENGE RESULTS

4-H youth across the state have been competing in their respective districts in a competitive technology event called Clover Challenge. It is similar to a quiz bowl and consists of multiple choice questions based on family finance, health, foods, clothing and home environment. The top two teams from each district will compete at the State Clover Challenge Contest on June 30th at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

There were 13 teams competing in the Southeast District including two teams from Hamilton County on Monday, March 24th. 4-H Program Manager, Kae Russell, and Extension Office support staff member, Barb Cox, coached and encouraged two young teams. Hamilton 1 consisted of Lucy Elge, Tyler Tomasek and Morgan Bredthauer. Hamilton 2 consisted of Libby Johnson, Elizabeth Cox and Jasmine Russell. This is only the second year of this competition and the first year for Hamilton County to send teams.

Winning teams from the Southeast District were Adams Co. Team 3 and Cass Co. Team 1. Hamilton Co. Team 1 placed third which means if one of the teams cannot go to State, they will step in and compete as First Alternate.
