Catherine Rahrs Benefit

Community Service — close to home... “Thank you” to all
4-Hers and their families who donated their time, lasagna and silent auction items to the benefit for former 4-H Leader, Catherine Rahrs, on Sunday evening, March 30th. Ladies running the event couldn’t say enough about how much help you provided and how long you worked!! The best part, though, was gathering around Catherine for pictures!! “THANK YOU and WELL DONE!!”

4-Hers and parents, please take time to say “Thank you” to your club leaders, give them a card, a call or a hug!! Let’s tell these caring adults how much we like them and appreciate all that they do for us and for Hamilton County 4-H!!

CONGRATULATIONS. . . !!

McKenzie Boley
Cami Huebert
Tasha Morton

4-H YOUTH AT WORK
Cami Huebert
Jasmine Russell
Kailin McClung

Beginning in late April, selected 4-H youth and volunteers will be featured in monthly stories that highlight how they are benefitting from the Nebraska 4-H Program. These feature stories will be written and distributed to newspapers statewide. Cami Huebert was selected in the first round based on topic area and district and was chosen to be featured in the Career Development area. Cami is starting her 9th year in 4-H and is the 2008 Hamilton County 4-H Queen. She has taken many projects including Sewing, Photography, Family Folklore, Bicycle, Celebrate Art, Poultry, Food Preservation, Clothing, Money Fundamentals and Tailoring to name a few, but her favorite project and her focus for many years has been Sewing.

Cami has taken her love of sewing to a new level by using her time and talents to entertain residents of Hamilton County and to raise funds to send her to a Big Red Summer Academic Camp focusing on sewing. She supported her efforts to go to camp by holding her own fashion show fund raiser. Cami incorporates her love of sewing into nearly everything she does. Great job, Cami!!

Hamilton County 4-H members, Kailin McClung and Jasmine Russell, were among the eight - ten youth chosen to be a part of a statewide Youth Multimedia Team. This is a group of youth interested in multimedia (the use of text, audio still images, animation, video, interactivity), technology and communication. These team members will gain new skills, service communities by completing projects and showcase to others the emerging technologies in the area of multimedia communication, all the while promoting Nebraska 4-H Program opportunities.

Jasmine is starting her 4th year in 4-H, and Kailin is starting her 7th year. In order to be selected, Jasmine and Kailin completed an online application form, a creative application questionnaire, and a nomination form. The creative application questionnaire could be submitted through an electronic media of the youth's own choice. Jasmine and Kailin submitted their creative questionnaires via PowerPoint presentations.

The Hamilton County Extension staff, would like to congratulate Cami, Jasmine and Kailin on their accomplishments!! Thank you for representing Hamilton County at the State level.

OMK Community Service Opportunity

Your club can help military kids across Nebraska by gathering items for Hero Packs. Take items to the Nebraska State Fair Cyber Fair that you have gathered during the spring and summer. Hero Packs are backpacks filled with mementos and items designed to help connect kids with their deployed family member. Presenting Hero Packs to kids is a way to show appreciation for their strength and sacrifices while their parents are deployed.

The backpacks have been donated but items are needed to fill them. Items needed for each pack are: a disposable camera, a small photo album, a journal, books, small stuffed animal, frisbee, stationary, pencils/pens, postage stamps and a handwritten letter of thanks. The letter thanks the child for their contribution to our country.

For more information go to www.nebraskaomk.org or call Michele Myer at (402) 444-7804.

2008 HAMILTON COUNTY FAIR

The Ag Society has announced that the fair theme for the 2008 Hamilton County Fair is “Who Do We Appreciate in 2008".

RECORD BOOK CHANGES

The Career Portfolio is required for receiving premiums from the County Fair. Project record books will no longer be required with the exception of the livestock projects.

DOG CLINIC DATE CHANGES

Sunday afternoons, 4 - 6 pm at the Fairgrounds, May 4, 18, June 22, July 6, 13, 20.

“PAWS ON” - DOG WORKSHOP

UNL Extension in Lancaster County is having a dog clinic that sounds like a lot of fun and very reasonably priced. You can find the information at the following website, http://lancaster.unl.edu/4h/documents/DogWorkshop08.pdf, or stop by the Extension Office today, and we’ll be glad to provide you with information and a registration form.

DISTRICT & STATE HORSE SHOW ENTRIES DUE

Entries for the District and State 4-H Horse Shows are due in the Extension Office by Friday, May 9th. The entry information must be accompanied by horsemanship level completion information and I.D. sheets for the horses to be eligible for district and state shows.

HAMILTON COUNTY 4-H OPEN HORSE SHOW

The Open Horse Show will be Saturday, July 26th, starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, Aurora. Anyone interested in helping at the horse show this year, please contact Barb at the Extension Office. We always need help with handing out ribbons, running the gates, entries, etc.

NEW CLOVER KIDS LIVESTOCK CLASS

This class will allow Clover Kids to bring or borrow one beef, sheep, dairy, goat or swine. The animal is required to be age, size and temperament appropriate for the exhibitors’ age and size. The overriding maximum limit on age and weight will be 6 months and 350 pounds. Along with the privilege of bringing their own animal comes the responsibility of caring for the animal and pen. This means that Clover Kids must clean their own pen. State guidelines presented in the 4-H Animal Exhibit Handbook prohibit premium money being paid to Clover Kids, however, participation ribbons will be awarded. This will be an excellent way to get our young 4-Hers started in animal husbandry. Please Note: Although visual identification of the animal is not required, the office requires that the animals are entered by July 7th so pens can be assigned. Animals not entered by July 7th will not be allowed to be penned or shown at the fair.

GET CONNECTED TO A CAREER!!

Many 4-H projects have a direct or indirect tie to a career choice. Stop by the Extension Office and ask about the 4-H Connection. See how careers can begin their development as early as your projects begin. We can show you the link between YOUR 4-H projects and careers such as Information Technology, Agriculture, Finance, Natural Resources and Health Sciences to name just a few. There are many careers that can begin as a career plan in your life through the decisions you make in 4-H.

4-H Gets You Connected!!

4-H, your first class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

HORTICULTURE CONTEST 2008

The Horticulture Contest, along with the tree and grass/weed contests, will be moved back to the State Fair and will be held on Saturday, August 30th. Specific location and time details will follow once they are finalized.

The horticulture contest will be plant identification only. A new plant list along with a study guide can be found at http://www.agronomy.unl.edu/newoutreach/youthprograms.html. The new plant list contains plants that are commonly used/sold in Nebraska. Eighty plants will be selected from this list.

Top four place winners in the horticulture contest will have the opportunity to participate in a proposed horticultural education trip during the summer of 2009. This trip is tentatively replacing the late fall trip from previous years.

A new online horticulture contest will be available. This is just an extra contest and will have no impact on the state horticulture contest. The plant list will be the same for this online contest which will be open from July 7-13th. A link to access this contest will become available closer to the date.

Special Horticulture and Crops Projects

We have a couple of fun projects lined up for this year. Back, due to popular demand, is the "Tall Corn" project. We will provide the tall corn seed, and it's up to you to plant the seed and nurture the crop. Let's see who can grow the tallest corn.

The other project is the "Upside Down Tomato" project. How well can you make a tomato grow upside down? We will provide the protocol and data sheet. You will provide a tomato seedling, a plastic bucket with lid and potting soil. This promises to be a lot of fun and educational too!
